Autobiography of William Richardson, 1884.

Negative photocopy of William Richardson's autobiography, covering the years from 1839 to 1884. Begins with an account of his birth and childhood in Scotland, including the death of his mother and his work in the mines as a young child. Details his conversion to the Mormon faith and accounts of other acquaintances baptized into the Mormon Church. Also describes his life in Pennsylvania, his journey to Utah, his experiences with mining strikes, his logging and saw mill work, and his travels throughout Utah. The final portion of the manuscript is titled "Sermons" and describes various Mormon sermons Richardson attended in 1884, as well as his own thoughts on Mormon theology. Interspersed with these writings are diary entries from Richardson's daily life. Also includes the lyrics to "Brother Kelsay's Song."

William Richardson was born in Lanark, Scotland, on June 18, 1829. He worked in the mines from the age of ten, and after his mother's death moved often, living with his grandmother, father and stepmother, and aunt. In 1849 Richardson was baptized into the Mormon Church by Andrew Farguson (Ferguson). In 1851 he married Ann Walker (also called Joan Fatheringham) in Glasgow, and in 1856 the family left Scotland for the United States, settling in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
